A coward for what? Not telling Castle the truth? Is she wrong? Yes. Is she doing it to be selfish? I don’t believe that in the least. Is she being cowardly? No. She’s not doing it because she’s scared… she’s doing it because she wants to better herself first for him. To “have the right kind of relationship.” But she’s also reluctant. Castle has a past and just telling someone you love them while they lie dying isn’t exactly the best way to prove they’ve changed. If anything, Beckett has shown tremendous growth. In s3 she had Josh there as a buffer against Castle because of the hurt she received at the end of s2. No, again, I don’t believe she just used Josh. I think she cared for him a lot. But she knew she had feelings for Castle and she was scared to death of being hurt again so she moved on with Josh instead of allowing her feelings for Castle to come into play. It didn’t work… they had such an emotional affair in s3. lol But, in the end, when she realized the extent of Castle’s feelings she also realized how deep her feelings went and she did the right thing by letting Josh go… and then it was about her need to “bring down that wall” for Castle. For them. How is that cowardly? She’s not running away from Castle… she’s trying to run towards him.
Beckett, unlike many fictional characters, but like most people, is complex. There are many definitions of bravery. I actually think the way Beckett is trying to break down her wall is an extreme act of bravery. Deep seated emotions (not to mention PTSD) are hard to work through and she is trying to become a better person for Castle. No, she hasn’t told him that she heard him because that would mean having to express her own feelings and she’s obviously not ready for that yet. In real life, sometimes you never get through these emotions, ever. It’s courageous that she’s even trying.
As for how she’s treating Castle, how is she treating Castle really? She’s lied to him to protect their relationship. But remember that he lied to her too and not about something insignificant. This is something that they are going to have to resolve before they can be together.
If you think about it, Beckett doesn’t tease Castle like she did even last season (remember the button?). Most of the teasing is friendly banter not designed to “get a rise out of him.” It’s more lighthearted flirting than the kind of “I know you want me, but you can’t have me” flirting that she used to do (especially in Season 1). She would never grab him by the ear now. And with the 2 parter, I think she showed her hand more than she meant to with Jealous Beckett, but she couldn’t stop herself. I think Castle didn’t take offense because he suspects what she isn’t saying, that they’re relationship has fundamentally changed and that she loves him.
